Separation Anxiety

Do you feel like you are forever in your own personal lockdown? I can help!

What is separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety is a condition where your dog is afraid to be home alone.

A dog with true separation anxiety is not being attention seeking, or “acting up” they have a genuine phobia.

It is still unknown exactly what causes separation anxiety, but we do know that it is not your fault!

How do I know that my dog has Separation Anxiety?

If you are unsure if your dog is suffering from separation anxiety, book a free phone consultation so we can discuss your dog’s home alone behaviour.

All our separation anxiety training takes place remotely so your location doesn’t matter. To connect with my clients, I use Zoom which is incredibly simple to use. Don’t worry if technology isn’t your thing, I can guide you through everything we do.

I will only use and advise modern dog training methods which are backed by scientific research. This means that you will never hear me recommend anything which will hurt your dog or make them feel scared and anxious. As an SA Pro Trainer, I have studied and been tested on my ability to help dogs overcome separation anxiety.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, I don’t have a magic wand and there are no quick fixes for separation anxiety. So this will take time and effort, but I am here to support both you and your dog throughout your journey.

What does separation anxiety training involve?

  • When a dog is suffering from separation anxiety, they are panicking because they are scared of being alone. Each time they are left alone that fear is reinforced. For this reason, it is important that during your training you suspend absences – this means finding creative ways to ensure that your dog is not left home alone.
  • Most people train 5 days a week, with two “days off” as the dog needs time to process the training.
  • Depending on what your dog can cope with now, training could start with an exercise as simple as getting up and walking towards the door, stopping 6 feet short of the door and returning. Repeating this 10 times, or until your dog becomes disinterested.
  • You will then progress through to touching the handle, opening the door etc. then finally going outside and shutting the door.
  • As you progress through our tried and tested methodology you will build up in small increments, teaching your dog that it is not scary for them to be on their own.
